We are a family run care business with three very successful Care Homes which, due to our excellent reputation all have waiting lists. We have a very strict policy when recruiting staff. They are all local to the Bexhill, Cooden, St Leonards area. We recruit people who have a natural affinity with others, show empathy, really care and have an outgoing and friendly disposition. They are smart in appearance and ultimately professional. We have a very strong ethos at Coast Care of dignity, encouraging independence and enhancing life in every way. Our approach is the same in our Home Care and within our Care Homes and every member of staff believes in this philosophy.
We believe knowledge is paramount to high quality care, therefore we run a training programme for all our care workers which covers legislation, such as First Aid, Manual Handling, Health and Safety, Safeguarding Adults at Risk, Food Hygiene, Medication and Infection Control. In addition to this, all our staff will undertake a vital training programme called “In their shoes” which (using a simulation set) shows the care worker what sort of difficulties we face as we get older, and how to assist with these. It also gives them an understanding of dementia which is vital when looking after people who may be in the early to mid stages of this illness, in order that they can assist with the difficulties faced by the person concerned. Specific training is also rolled out to staff on specific health conditions eg sign language, stroke awareness, diabetes, continence. Our in house trainer delivers many of these courses. We encourage our staff to study an NVQ in Care as soon as possible and support them with this. Please ask if you have any questions about our expertise.
We continuously monitor our staffs work and progress in many different ways, eg supervisions on a regular basis, questionnaires to residents/clients, and spot checks. Before offering a position with Coast Care, we undertake rigorous safety checks with the Disclosure and Barring Service. We also take two written references from most recent employers and supervise them working with clients before they work on their own. We also have a computerised system which involves the careworker calling a freephone number when they arrive at the clients home and again when they leave so that the system knows that the home visit was made. It also checks that the duration of visit is correct. If there was a situation out of the careworkers control, eg car breakdown, we are alerted in the office that the carer has not arrived on time and We can then telephone the client before they become worried or distressed, to let them know that there is a delay.
